5 Reasons We Benefit From Using Organic Cotton

by Sian Atkins October 16, 2022 3 min read

So, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if you are reading this journal entry then you probably know a little about us here at JRH or even read our journals regularly.  If so thank you, your support means so much to us.

If not, and you’ve happened to stumble across this journal; a big warm hello and welcome.

We; meaning my husband Paul and I, are the founders and owners of JRH.  Alongside our son and daughter we have created a small but mighty independent business that is vegan owned and is currently mixing it up in the clothing world here in a place called Orihuela Costa, Spain.  We have been the first in the area to offer clothing and an ethos from an eco and sustainable stand point, being headstrong in never diluting our brand or slipping into clothing and processes that are a part of cheaper production.  That would only result in fast fashion, poor wages and bad working conditions, alongside being environmentally un-sustainable.  But us, oh no!  We aim to stay focused on being the complete opposite and enjoy pushing the boundaries to help in any small way create a better world.

So with that in mind, please let me give you a little insight into why we use organic cotton for the majority of our clothing line on offer, and how it makes for a sustainable fashion brand.  We love organic cotton, and here are our top 5 reasons behind why we benefit from its use.

  1. It’s Not Harmful

Organic cotton is a raw material and we use manufacturers who only source materials that are grown or produced in ways that do not harm people, animals or the environment. The cotton we use at JRH is 100% GOTS certified organic cotton from India, and with this certification you know that the people who create your fabrics are paid a living wage and fairly compensated for their hard work.

  1. Requires Less Energy & Water

Organic cotton production requires less energy and water than standard cotton and other fabrics.  Organic cotton differentiates from conventional cotton as it has a much lower impact on the environment.  Regular cotton is farmed with GMO or genetically modified seeds which require pesticides, however organic cotton is made from natural seeds and no harmful chemicals or pesticides.

  1. It’s Vegan Approved

We are not hypocrites! Ok, so everything Paul and I do must align with our own beliefs and morals.  How could we truly be vegan and sustainable if we used materials that are derived from animals or that are genetically modified?  We just couldn't or wouldn't want to.  JRH is very strict in only using materials and fabrics that come from a good place, and luckily organic cotton is vegan approved and doesn't destroy ecosystems.  In-fact its also known to improve soil quality too.

  1. Durable & 100% Biodegradable

Organic Cotton is 100% biodegradable and recyclable!  Because organic cotton is grown in fields and not synthetic it is completely biodegradable which means we don't have to worry about it filling up landfills.  What a lovely notion knowing that under the proper weather conditions and microbial action, organic cotton can be decomposed into carbon matter and water, and although it may take some tome, organic cotton will always return to nature.

Organic cotton is also very durable, meaning it will last a long time if properly cared for in the first place, which in simple terms keeps it away from landfill for a lot longer.

  1. Environmentally Friendly!

Yes, please - Organic cotton is one of the most environmentally friendly materials on the market as it does not have a harsh manufacturing process, which makes it a far better sustainable solution.  Based on Life Cycle Analysis, on average, by using organic methods a huge 1,982 gallons of water is saved per cotton t-shirt. Thats absolutely amazing!  If you want to be more considerate to the environment and the planet, then purchasing clothing that uses natural and eco friendly materials really is a great start.

So here we have just heard 5 reasons why we love and use organic cotton, how it benefits us all, the environment and the planet; which in turn allows us to shop more sustainably.

We will continue to maintain our ethos of sustainability and our eco happy culture here at JRH.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this weeks journal; and thank you again for your continued support.

Thanks for reading

Sian
